Where did The Mustard Tree Project Get its name?

The Mustard Tree draws its name from one of the stories (or Parables) told by Jesus to his disciples. The Bible refers to this story as "The Parable of the Mustard Seed" and, although Jesus used the story to describe the Kingdom of Heaven, we felt that it described the birth and purpose of the project and also prophetically speaks of how we hope to help each of our clients grow to independence. Do I have to be a Christian or have a Faith to Apply to or be a Client of Mustard Tree?

No. Not at all. Although some of our staff are Christians, not all are. Of those staff that are Christians, not all are part of Heartlands Church. The same is true of our clients - church and Christian activities are external to the project and available if anyone asks. Refer to our application process and equal opportunities policy for more info.

How is The Mustard Tree Project funded?

As an organisation we raise funds to support each residential client's place from different sources which are basically as follows:

  1. Each client signs a Licence Agreement to live in a Mustard Tree Project property.  This licence gives a liability for a charge equivalent to rent and allows a client to claim Housing Benefit, with our help, to meet some or all of this charge.

  2. The Mustard Tree Project has a contract with Supporting People through Warwickshire County Council to deliver support services.  This contract effectively pays for much of the support clients receive and some of the administration costs that we have in running the project.

  3. Certain charges are not eligible for either housing benefit or Supporting people funding.  These will be charged through a client's Personal Contribution.  Each client's Personal Contribution is negotiated individually depending upon the services that are supplied routinely, the extra services a client may wish to take and the level of entitlement they have to benefits.

  4. Many of our additional activities are not funded by the ways listed above.  Donations from members of the public towards our work are always welcome.  To find out more about how you can donate, please contact us.

How can I Apply?

Although we encourage applicants to make self-enquiries and obtain application forms, at present we do not accept self-referrals. We send out application forms to "referring agents". A referring agent will normally be someone like a GP, Consultant Psychiatrist, CPN or social worker. They will complete the form with the applicant and send it to us complete with supporting documentation such as CPA documentation.

We review each application and decide on an applicant's suitability based upon criteria such as:

  • suitability for shared living

  • independence skills

  • whether or not our type of service best fits an applicant's needs and how we feel we can help

Suitable applicants are usually interviewed with a view ti joining our waiting list.  When a vacancy does arise, we will select an applicant based upon whether or not they are likely to fit in to the particular shared house.  We do not discriminate against race, religion, gender, marital status, sexual orientation or disability (although all our bedrooms are located on the first floor).
